Bio

Alicia Serling is a conceptual artist living in Los Angeles, California. She earned her BFA in General Fine Arts with a concentration in Curatorial Studies at Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD. In 2022 she will earn her MFA from Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, CA.

Her work ranges from sculptural assemblage, painting and drawings. Inspired by materials, nature, healing, violence, oppression, feminism, the history of witchcraft, she creates narrative somatic effigies. Serling’s rich material language is highlighted by the use of salts, herbs, spices, jars, bottles, stone, cord, zip ties, pills, rope and charcoal.

Serling has shown her work nationally, in both solo and group exhibitions. Her personally spiritual witchcraft practice started around 2005 and slowly became integral to her work. Its earliest manifestation was in my “Loss of Sleep” (2011) installation which was shown twice in the Senior Show at MICA and again in the BEMIS Biennial in Seattle. She was awarded an Honorable Mention at the “Now Trending” show Palos Verdes Art Center for three of my works revolving around her research into witchcraft; “The Hidden Ones” (2020) “I’ll Be My Own Person” (2020) “Chaos, Anarchy, The Very Essence of Evil” (2020). Taking from rich histories and inspired by artists like Arte Povera, Minimalism, Candcie Lin, Anna Betbeze, Kiki Smith, Hannah Wilke, to name a few.
